Faceted Search Configuration

Configure filters, facets, and category interactions in the Studio dashboard.

What is Faceted Search?

Faceted search provides multi-dimensional filtering that allows users to narrow down search results by applying multiple criteria simultaneously. Unlike traditional search that returns a single list, faceted search shows available filter options (facets) that dynamically update based on the current search context.

Key Benefits

  • Guided Discovery: Help users explore your catalog systematically
  • Reduced Cognitive Load: Break down complex choices into manageable filters
  • Dynamic Results: Filter counts update in real-time as users refine their search
  • Conversion Optimization: Help users find relevant products faster

How Facets Work

Facets are dynamic filter options that appear alongside search results. They show available values for specific attributes and update in real-time as users apply filters, showing only relevant options and accurate counts for the current search context.

Facet Structure

  • •
Facet Name: The attribute being filtered (e.g., "Manufacturer", "Category")
  • •
Facet Values: Available options within that attribute
  • •
Result Counts: Number of matching products for each value
  • •
Selection State: Checked/unchecked status of each option

Dynamic Behavior

  • •
Real-time Updates: Counts change as filters are applied
  • •
Context Awareness: Only shows relevant options for current results
  • •
Single Selection: Currently supports selecting one facet value at a time
  • •
AND/OR Logic: Combine filters across different facets

Manufacturers Facet

The Manufacturers facet allows users to filter products by brand or manufacturer. This is particularly valuable for e-commerce sites where brand loyalty and brand recognition drive purchasing decisions.

How Manufacturers Facet Works

Data Source

The Manufacturers facet is populated from the field in your XML feed. Each unique manufacturer value becomes a filterable option.

Display Logic

Manufacturers are displayed alphabetically with product counts. Popular or featured brands can be prioritized through configuration settings.

Single Brand Selection

Currently supports selecting one manufacturer at a time. Users can filter to see products from a specific brand like "Sony" or "Samsung".

Example: Manufacturer Filtering

Scenario: User searches for "wireless headphones"

Available Manufacturers:

  • • Sony (15 products)
  • • Bose (8 products)
  • • JBL (12 products)
  • • Sennheiser (6 products)
  • • Audio-Technica (4 products)

User Selects:

  • ☑️ Sony
  • ☐ Bose
  • ☐ JBL
  • ☐ Sennheiser
  • ☐ Audio-Technica

Result: Shows only Sony wireless headphones (15 total products)

Categories Facet

The Categories facet enables hierarchical filtering based on your product taxonomy. This helps users narrow down results within specific product categories, making it easier to find items in large catalogs.

How Categories Facet Works

Hierarchical Structure

Categories support hierarchical organization (e.g., "Electronics > Audio > Headphones"). The facet can display either flat lists or nested hierarchies depending on your configuration.

Data Source

Categories are populated from the field in your XML feed. Supports both simple category names and hierarchical paths separated by delimiters.

Dynamic Updates

As users apply other filters, the available categories update to show only those containing matching products, with accurate counts for each category level.

Example: Category Filtering

Scenario: User searches for "gaming"

Available Categories:

  • • Electronics > Computers > Laptops (25)
  • • Electronics > Gaming > Consoles (18)
  • • Electronics > Gaming > Accessories (32)
  • • Electronics > Audio > Gaming Headsets (15)
  • • Toys & Games > Board Games (8)

User Selects:

  • ☑️ Electronics > Gaming > Consoles
  • ☐ Electronics > Gaming > Accessories
  • ☐ Electronics > Computers > Laptops
  • ☐ Electronics > Audio > Gaming Headsets
  • ☐ Toys & Games > Board Games

Result: Shows only gaming consoles (18 total products)

Category Hierarchy Handling

XML Category Examples

Electronics

Electronics > Audio > Headphones

Electronics > Audio > Headphones

Electronics > Wearables

Hierarchy Delimiter: Use " > " (greater than symbol with spaces) to separate category levels

Display Options: Configure whether to show full hierarchy or just leaf categories

Combined Manufacturer & Category Filtering

The real power of faceted search emerges when users combine filters from different facets. This allows for precise product discovery using multiple criteria simultaneously.

Example: Multi-facet Filtering

Scenario: User wants Sony gaming headphones under $200

Search Query:

"gaming headphones"

Manufacturer Filter:

  • ☑️ Sony (5 products)
  • ☐ Bose (3 products)
  • ☐ SteelSeries (8 products)

Category Filter:

  • ☑️ Electronics > Audio > Gaming (5)
  • ☐ Electronics > Audio > Studio (2)

Result: Shows exactly 5 Sony gaming headphones that match the search criteria, demonstrating how facets work together to provide precise filtering.

Filter Logic

Within Facets (OR Logic)

Multiple selections within the same facet use OR logic. Selecting "Sony" OR "Bose" shows products from either manufacturer.

Between Facets (AND Logic)

Selections from different facets use AND logic. Selecting "Sony" AND "Gaming" shows only Sony gaming products.

Best Practices

Optimize your faceted search implementation for better user experience and conversion rates.

User Experience

  • ✓
Show relevant facets first: Prioritize Manufacturer and Category facets
  • ✓
Use clear labels: "Brand" instead of "Manufacturer" if more appropriate
  • ✓
Display counts: Help users understand filter impact
  • ✓
Allow easy reset: Clear all filters with one click

Technical Optimization

  • ✓
Limit facet values: Show top 10-15 options initially
  • ✓
Use lazy loading: Load facet options on demand
  • ✓
Cache facet data: Reduce server load for popular searches
  • ✓
Optimize XML structure: Ensure clean manufacturer and category data

💡 Pro Tips

  • • Test facet combinations to ensure logical results
  • • Monitor which facets users interact with most
  • • Consider mobile users when designing facet layout
  • • Use A/B testing to optimize facet order and presentation
  • • Regularly clean and standardize manufacturer and category data
